Frequently asked questions

AutoPASS is the Norwegian system for collecting tolls. It is owned by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

There are about 230 toll stations in Norway where you can pay with an AutoPASS tag. All these toll stations are marked with "AutoPASS". Discounts and exemptions presuppose a valid subscripiton and registered tag.

When passing through toll stations without an AutoPASS subscripiton, a photo of the license plate is taken. The registration number on the license plate is checked in the motor vehicle register of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration. The car owner is sent an invoice that contains information about the passage, vehicle and amount due.

AutoPASS is the AutoPASS collaboration between all toll companies in Norway. This is what allows you to have a subscription with a company and achieve the same benefits in all tolls.

See more at www.autopass.no

With the AutoPASS subscription, a discount is obtained at most toll companies in Norway.
It does not matter where you order the tag- you get the same discount on the road and ferry anyway, provided a valid subscripiton and tag.
An overview of all tagissuers can be found here.

AutoPASS tag and valid subscripiton is mandatory for vehicles with a totally allowed weight of more than 3.5 tonnes that are registered or leased by companies, the state, municipalities, county municipalities as well as vehicles that are registered to private individuals and used in business.

If you are unsure whether the vehicle is used in industry \ business, it is recommended that you enter into an subscripiton with a AutoPASS tag  to avoid uncertainty in a control situation.

The AutoPASS tag must be used in the vehicle it is registered on. If the AutoPASS tag is moved to another vehicle, the subscripiton must be changed. A fine is given at check-in if the chip number is linked to a different registration number than the one used in. The registration number can be changed on "My page" at your toll company.

This applies to the entire Norwegian public road network.

This does not apply to military vehicles affiliated with NATO, NATO forces in the Partnership for Peace and vehicles adapted for military purposes owned by the military.

Further information on the mandatory AutoPASS tag can be found here.

Prices and discounts at the various toll companies depend on which tariff group the vehicle belongs to.

These tariff groups apply when passing through toll stations in Norway:

TARIFF GROUP 1

  • Vehicles with a permissible total weight up to and including 3.5 tons, as well as all cars regardless of weight in vehicle group M1. In order for vehicles over 3.5 tons to be included in tariff group 1, an AutoPASS tag and a valid subscription are required.

TARIFF GROUP 2

  • Vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tons, with the exception of cars registered in vehicle group M1 (with a valid subscription).
  • Vehicles with a permissible total weight of more than 3.5 tonnes used in industry: it is mandatory for all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes used in industry in Norway to have an AutoPASS tag  with a valid subscription for tariff group 2. Read more about mandatory tag  for heavy vehicle.

On ferries with AutoPASS, fares are calculated based on the length of the vehicle. This also applies to the use of the tag on Storebælt bridge.

Vehicle group M1

Vehicle group M1 includes cars for passenger transport with a maximum of eight seats in addition to the driver's seat. Most motorhomes, caravans and some other larger passenger cars are included in this vehicle group.

New scheme for tariff calculation:

On 4 April 2016, a new scheme was introduced which means that cars over 3500 kg in group M1 can receive the same fare as cars under 3500 kg
A valid subscription is then required with a tag.

We refer to the terms of the agreement:

2.9 The customer is entitled to  discount and any exemption for passings when the tag has been registered and the subscripiton is valid. You lose the right to discounts and exemptions when the subscripiton is blocked, in the event of a credit limit being exceeded, when unpaid claims are sent for collection or in the event of a wrong address, Invoices are then sent to the vehicle owner.

To get a tag, choose "Light vehicle - under 3,500kg" when you sign a subscription.

NORWEGIAN CARS

Norwegian cars in vehicle group M1, with AutoPASS tag and valid subscription, are automatically included in tariff group 1.

FOREIGN CARS WITH AUTOPASS TAG

Owners of foreign-registered cars in vehicle group M1, with an AutoPASS tag and a valid subscription, must contact their tag issuer to ensure that they are charged in tariff group 1.

WITH OTHER TYPES OF EASYGO TAGS

Owners of cars over 3500 kg in vehicle group M1, who use other types of EasyGo tags than AutoPASS, must contact their tag issuer to ensure that they are charged in tariff group 1 for toll passes in Norway.

Discount for electric cars presupposes a valid AutoPASS subscription and a registered tag. Without an subscription the electric car will be charged full price.

The obligation to pay tolls follows from the regulations on payment of tolls of 28 November 2016 no. 1418, given on the basis of the Road Act § 27.

  • In some tolls, electric cars have their own tariff. This applies to toll rings with environmentally differentiated tariffs, such as at Fjellinjen (Oslo) and in Bergen. Here, an electric car without a valid AutoPASS subscription will have to pay a fee for an electric car. With a valid AutoPASS subscription, electric cars will receive a 20% discount on this rate.
  • In other tolls, a discount is given in accordance with the tarif for electric cars that has a valid AutoPASS subscription. If you pass the toll with an electric car without a valid AutoPASS subscription , this means that you pay the highest price (Rate group 1 - Vehicles with a permissible total weight up to and including 3500 kg. Rate group 2 - Vehicles with a permissible total weight over 3500 kg.)

We refer to the following guidelines in the Guide for Toll Projects 010919:

  • All discounts require a valid Autopass subscription.
  • Zero-emission vehicles: A 50-100 percent discount is given in each tariff group, depending on what is determined in local policy for the individual toll project.

The AutoPASS agreement Section 2.9:

The customer is entitled to  discount and any exemption for passings when the tag has been registered and the subscripiton is valid. You lose the right to discounts and exemptions when the subscripiton is blocked, in the event of a credit limit being exceeded, when unpaid claims are sent for collection or in the event of a wrong address, Invoices are then sent to the vehicle owner.

Exemption from tolls in toll rings for people with reduced mobility

The toll company may, upon application, grant an exemption for people with reduced mobility in toll rings. The exemption does not apply in other toll stations.

Holders of a parking permit with a validity of at least two years in accordance with regulations on parking permits for people with reduced mobility may be granted an exemption. The exemption require the use of an autoPASS tag and a valid AutoPASS subscription. The exemption is linked to one car and the tag can not be moved between cars without changing the subscription. The subscription can not be changed so that the exemption holder can use the tag in several vehicles. If the exemption holder has several vehicles, one must choose the vehicle that is most appropriate to have the exemption attached to.

Foreign nationals who are disabled and who can present proof marked with the international symbol for disabled people and the name of the person entitled or the identification mark on the vehicle may receive a corresponding exemption.

Parents with children with reduced mobility, where the child has a parking permit, can, upon application to the toll company, gett the exemption on two cars and tags.

Children are in this context defined as persons under 18 years of age.

The parking permit and the AutoPASS subscription must be in the same name. The exception is when children under 18 years of age.

An application for exemption for tolls in toll rings must be sent to the toll company. The application must contain name, e-mail address / telephone number, car number and tag number. In addition, a copy of the front and back of the parking permit must be attached, as well as a confirmation from the tag issuer that the vehicle has a valid subscription for AutoPASS.

Application for exemption can be sent to:
Email: kontakt@vegamot.no
Post: Vegamot AS, Postboks 1905 Moholt, 7448 Trondheim

Complaints are sent to kontakt@vegamot.no. If the decision is upheld, the complaint can be forwarded to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, firmapost@vegvesen.no.
